A Few Notes About the Hawaii Volcano Eruption

I was talking to a guy from Hilo, Hawaii yesterday and he brought up some good points that preppers may want to note about the Kilauea volcano:

• He pointed out that previous to this most recent eruption, the land in the path of the lava flow (this is the path the lava has always taken) was pretty cheap and that many people bought up that cheap land and built houses on it.  Darwin would probably have something to say about that.
• And then there was the guy who thought that watching searing hot lava shoot into the sky near him was a spectator event.  He was hit by said lava and may lose a leg because of it.  Darwin would probably have something to say about this too.
• I didn't even know that laze and vog were a thing but apparently they are.  When the lava erupts it creates vog in the air, when the lava hits the ocean it creates laze; both of these can be harmful to anyone who is breathing this stuff in.
• Living near an active volcano means people need to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice (and some will never be able to return to their home as more than 40 homes have been wiped out in this latest volcanic event so far).
• And like any evacuation where the alternative is near certain death, don't wait too long to leave.  Some people had to be evacuated from the area by helicopter because lava covered the only evacuation route.
• Anyone who lives near an active volcano should sign up for emergency alerts and check the county's civil defense alerts page frequently.
• People who have planned a vacation to Hawaii should check online and see if there will be any problems with their vacation plans.
• Of course anyone who lives in an area with active volcanoes should immediately read up on how to prepare for a volcanic event even if there is no immediate threat.
